A survey conducted revealed that around 400,000 people, mostly women, receive silicon breast implants every year, and because of this, people are suffering from severe health complications. The health index of people is gradually decreasing at a very fast rate.. The health issues in breasts are becoming very common due to the use of these silicone breasts implant. A team led by MIT research has now systematically analyzed how the varying surface architecture or the surface topography of these implants highly influences and provokes the development of adverse effects, which in rare cases can be able to include an unusual type of lymphoma. The immune system is disturbed due to the surface topography of an implant. It is said by a former postdoc who is a former MIT, and he hopes this paper provides a proper inside of the pros and cons of it.
The results could also help scientists develop more biocompatible implants in the future that would be safe. “We are pleased that we were able to bring new approaches to materials science to better understand biocompatibility problems in the area of breast implants. The studies we conduct will be extremely helpful in understanding how safer and more effective implants of any kind can be developed,” says Robert Langer, professor at the David H. Koch Institute at MIT and lead author of the study. Assistant professor of Rice University and Joshua Doloff, a former MIT postdoctoral fellow who is now an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University, are the lead authors on the paper, which appears today in Nature Biomedical Engineering. The research team includes scientists from Rice University, Johns Hopkins, Establishment Labs, and MD Anderson Cancer Center, among others.
Silicone breast implants have been in use since the 1960s, and earlier versions had smooth surfaces due to which these implants often had a complication called capsular contracture, in which scar tissue forms around the implant and tightens it, causing pain or discomfort as well as visible deformation of the implant. These implants can also be flipped over after implantation, which may require adjustment or surgical removal.
