Prominent factors driving the growth of this market consist of growing geriatric population and chronic diseases, technological development, rising demand of non-contact thermometers, rising incidence of hypertension, rapidly changing lifestyle are fuel the growth of vital signs monitoring market.
Growing geriatric population and chronic diseases:
Population ageing is seen to be taking place worldwide in all the countries. Ageing results from declining fertility and decreasing mortality. As the number of older adults is increasing, the demand on public health systems and on medical and social services is also increasing. There has also been gradual demographic transition from patterns of high fertility and mortality to low fertility and delayed mortality rates. As a result of such demographic transitions, the shape of global age distribution is changing. Increase in hypertension, temperature, etc. causes demand for vital signs monitoring devices. High blood pressure can lead to heart diseases, kidney diseases, and heart stroke and also cause death at times.
Causing of several diseases like coronary artery disease, dementia, kidney failure, kidney artery aneurysm etc. affect older adults to disability, low quality of life, increase in health and long term care costs. Before the detection of any disease, it becomes a compulsion to have the vital signs monitoring. Thus with the growing number of diseases, the demand for vital signs monitoring is also increasing.
According to journal published in Economic and Social Commission in 2016, approximately 12.4 per cent of the population in the region was 60 years or older, but this is projected to increase to more than 1.3 billion people by 2050.
With the advancement in technologies and the trend of digital devices, there has been a tremendous increase in the demand of wireless devices. Also along with the awareness of treatments of all diseases, people tend to cure and take treatments as early as it is possible for them. Time and distance being a critical factor, huge amount of global population is suffering from blood pressure. The aging population is seen to have blood pressure.
The emergence of e-patients (people using internet and electronic communication tools to research and communicate about medical conditions) has given a new start for healthy ageing era. Telemedicine technology has helped the healthcare systems to sustain and thus encourage health care infrastructure to grow more. This technology helps health care professionals to communicate and exchange valuable and valid information till patients and needy. The European Commission noted the importance of telemedicine that it could meet special needs of older adults by allowing them to live longer in their own homes along with more independence, and also reduce the costs for inpatient care. For example, telemedicine devices which monitor chronic disease patient’s vital signss (e.g., blood pressure, temperature, pulse oximetry) can cut health care costs and thus prevent hospitalization.
Today home healthcare devices are available in wide range. Many people suffer from hypertensions, diabetes, respiratory disorders and thus need a regular checkup. In order to avoid frequent visits and appointments, people prefer using home healthcare devices, thus helping to give a rise in the usage of ambulatory devices. Thus efforts to decrease the length of hospital stay and shifting the care to ambulatory settings have contributed to the growth of home care in the past decade.
According to International Journal of Engineering Trends and Technology (IJETT), In India in May 2013, Scientists from BAMU University developed Wi-Fi Based vital signss monitoring and tracking system for medical parameters. The project aims in designsing a system which helps in remote monitoring of patients heart rate, body temperature based on Wi-Fi communication. The medical parameters can be monitored on website in real-time. The advantage of this is the system is that doctors across the world can monitor the medical parameters and suggest the suitable medication. Wi-Fi Based Monitoring system for medical parameter has resulted from the helps in remote monitoring of patients heart rate, body temperature. This system has the advantages is that doctors across the world can monitor the medical parameters and suggest the suitable medication.
Rising demand of non-contact thermometers:
Temperature is one of the commonly seen vital signs in individuals. Thermometers used for measuring temperature are available in wide range. Thermometers have a wide range like contact thermometers (rectal, axillary or oral), chemical thermometers (forehead), infrared thermometers (tympanic, temporal artery) and mercury thermometers. Mercury thermometers are however no longer used in European Union and are also not available for purchase in U.K. since 2009. With the increasing concern of cross-contamination, spread of highly infectious diseases like Ebola, companies are now focusing to manufacture more thermometers which will reduce the concerns and thus help in increasing the demand for non-contact thermometers. These thermometers also help in giving more accurate measurements.
Non-Contact infrared thermometers (NCIT) can be used to measure temperature non-invasively and rapidly and can provide temperature readings in seconds. Most of the NCIT’s measure temperature over forehead but temperature over body surface can also be measured in cases if the child is moving. NCIT’s prove to be useful because use of these thermometers do not involve any body contact.
Traditional method of measuring temperature needs touching thermometer to the patient’s ear or mouth. This method is thought of spreading diseases because of direct contact to body and fluids on body. However infrared thermometers are the ones which have advantage over these normal thermometers. Use of these thermometers needs measuring of heat from a few inches away from the body.
