Market Definition

An optical coating contains one or more thin layers of material deposited on an optical component such as a lens or mirror, which modifies how the optic transmits and reflects light. One type of optical coating is an anti-reflective coating that reduces unwanted reflections from surfaces, and generally used on camera lenses and spectacle. Another type is the high-reflector coating, which can produce mirrors that reflect the light greater than 99.99% of the light and fall on them. More complex optical coatings exhibit high reflection over some range of wavelengths and anti-reflection over another range, allowing the production of dichroic thin-film filters.

Optical Coating Market Dynamics

Drivers

  • Rising demand for different application

The optical coating is principally driven by the growing demand for effective optical devices and increasing use in several industries. Optical coatings are commonly used in several applications, including solar panels, automotive, medical, telecommunication, architecture, consumer electronics, and military and defence which are expected to drive the growth of the optical coating market.

  • Growing demand in semiconductor and electronics industry

Optical coatings are mainly used in semiconductors, telecommunication and optics, high-temperature lamp tubing and microelectronics industries. The growing demand of this coatings in the semiconductor and electronics sectors have to withstand the  high charges of heat transfer in rapid high-temperature gradients and thermal processing which are generally applied to printed I.C.s, circuit board (PCB) coating and wafers to modify their properties. The continuous development in the electronics and semiconductor industry has augmented the use of new-generation wafers in semiconductors, which are expected to drive the demand for optical coatings.

  • Rising demand of anti-reflective coating

Anti-reflective optical coating can provide high-quality coatings with low anti-reflection performance and high transmission for components such as screens, lenses, mirrors and anti-reflection coatings which are used in various consumer and industrial applications worldwide. The rising demand of anti-reflective coating are expected to drive the demand of optical coating market.

Opportunities

  • Growing demand in automotive electronics

The rising demand for automotive electronics in the transportation end-use industry is expected to grow due to the increasing income levels in the global market premises. The optical coatings industry forms an important part of advanced automotive electronics devices and systems in the market premises. There has been an appearance of advanced driver assistance, along with the growth of entertainment system features and communication technology which are also being recognized for creating an opportunity for the optical coatings market to develop during the forecast period

Restraints/Challenges

  • Fluctuation in price and availability of raw material

The optical coating manufacturing process includes several raw materials, such as oxides, fluorides and metals. The fluctuation in availability and prices of raw materials, especially metals and their oxides, can adversely affect the manufacturing cost and restraint the growth rate of the market.

  • Adhere to environmental durability standards

The coating specifications include optical mode such as transmission or reflection, environmental durability requirements, the windscreen wiper test, laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT)/laser damage threshold (LDT). These standards contain test condition and requirements for the environmental durability of optical coatings. These factors poses a challenge to the manufacturers of optical coatings to adhere to environmental durability standards.

Recent Development

  • In April 2021, Newport Corporation has acquired all the outstanding shares of Coherent, Inc. for USD 250 per share, USD 115 in shares and composed of USD 135 in cash.
  • In September 2020, DuPont Electronics and Imaging announced the completion of a new plant dedicated to liquid polyimide (P.I.) for flexible display substrates and also response to the flexible display market's rapidly growing consumer business needs.
