Surgical robotics will have a prosperous short-term future, with most key players expected to introduce laparoscopic surgical robotic systems by 2020. By 2030, the convergence of several technology opportunities, including the maturity of image guidance and machine learning as well as continuing advances in minimally invasive access, will drive the emergence of next generation systems.
These will enable a new range of procedures, as systems can be smaller and more targeted to specific indications. The challenge will be to control the complexity of these systems so that the development costs do not prevent systems from entering the market and delivering patient benefit. Companies that overcome this challenge will have a significant competitive advantage to disrupt the current surgical state-of-the-art.
