A new species of mushroom is discovered in the dense forest of Meghalaya. Talking about the feautures and quality of mushroom you will be shocked after listening it because it is very rare. “Roridomyces Phyllostachydis” which is the new discovered species have ability to glow bright green in dark. The new species was first sighted on a wet August night near a stream in Meghalaya’s Mawlynnong on east khasi Hills district and later at Karang shuri in west Jantia hills district. A documentation project of mushroom has revealed not only 600 varieties of fungi, but also led to a new discovery which is a bioluminescent or you can say a glowing light emitting variety of mushroom. The news species named Roridomyces Phyllostachydis was very different when people first discover it the light coming out of it is very bright and fascinating at first. It was first sighted in Mawlynnong in East Khasi Hills district and later at krang shuri in west jaintia hills district. It is now among the 97 known species of bioluminescent species of fungi in the world and which are found on different parts of the globe and it is very rare.

How did the scientist chance upon the luminous mushroom?

In an Assam based conversation NGO Balipara foundation collaborated with many scientists from different domain kumming institute of botany, Chinese academy f sciences on a project to assess the fungal biodiversity of four states: Meghalaya, Assam, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. This unexpected discovery was spotted on the Meghalaya leg of their expedition. Stephen Axford and team photographer always has a habit to ask local if there are bioluminescent mushrooms around or not, it is a field in which there are many opportunities and challenges because no one knows when a new discovery is discovered and how to preserve it from the urge of extinction. The villagers of the local place then guided the team down a dark forest path which can be dangerous or full of experience. We could see tiny oinpricks of light along the way, said Axford, who set up a small outdoor studio to photograph the mushroom in the dark and for that highly equipped devices are needed, they were striking “.

On closer examination and deep study and post sequencing the ITS gene of the mushroom, the researchers found that the mushroom belonged to roridomyces genus and a new species which is named after the host bamboo tree, phyllostachys, from where it was first collected and picked to be a new discovery. The research results were published in the botany journal phytotaxa under the title “Roridomyces phyllostachydis, a new bioluminescent fungus from Northeast India. In the journal it is briefly written that this bioluminescent deiscovered species that how it is discovered and what is the future uses of it. Nature always has secrets hidden in it and if we access it then we can have many resources which can do the betterment of the regulations of ecosystem. It should also kept in mind that very high resources should not be used to extract the whole process or it is not maintained. Bioluminescent is the property of a living organism to produce and emit light.
