Global PACS Market

Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) promotes storage, presentation, retrieval, distribution and management of medical images. All the business functions of the department from patient analysis and management to inventory control are managed using PACS.

PACS has become the necessary tool for healthcare institutions such as hospitals, emergency care centers needs an important tool. Departmental picture archiving and communication system (PACS) help in supplying a massive storage space for the clinical images. Electronic images and reports are transferred digitally via PACS. Hence there is no need to manually file the folder use to store and protect X-ray film. The universal format for PACS image storage and transfer is DICOM (digital imaging and communications in medicine). A PACS consists of four major components mainly, The imaging modalities such as X-ray plain film (PF), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a secured network for the transmission of patient information, workstations for interpreting and reviewing images. PACS has the ability to deliver timely and efficient access to images, interpretations, and related data on combining with available and emerging web technology. PACS reduces the physical and time barriers related to traditional film-based image retrieval, distribution, and display.

The Dorenfest Institute for Health Information Technology, Research and Education, managed by the HIMSS Foundation, has released, Growth in Use of Picture Archiving and Communications System, A 2000-2008 Study.

Image distribution continues to spread outside the hospitals, as more procedures are performed in an outpatient setting, as technology enables users to access images outside of the hospital\

PACS technology was installed only in 8.5% of the hospitals, as per the study conducted in 2000. By 2008, around 3,928 hospitals out of the 5,168 hospitals covered under the survey, or about 76.0% of total hospitals, indicated that PACS was used in at least one of the modalities, such as digital mammography

A study was conducted to find the impact of PACS on its users in hospitals of Saudi Arabia, A questionnaire was prepared and was submitted, response rate was 62.5%. The study results showed that PACS has a positive impact on its users. Users have shown a positive insight towards the PACS for its impacts on their daily work. The findings of this study can greatly contribute to assist the radiology department and help them understand the user's perception on PACS. This study showed a positive impact, i.e., an indication of the status and insight of PACS users having a high perception rate towards PACS, which promises more future advancement in its usage. There was significant increase seen in the vendors marketing PACS (53-58) from 2000 to 2008. The top 10 vendors in the PACS market provided over 80.0% of PACs systems in 2008.

FACTORS DRIVING GROWTH IN PICTURE ARCHIVING AND COMMUNICATION SYSTEM MARKET

Demand for cloud-based PACS:

According to the Health Information and Management Systems Society Analytics 2016 Cloud Survey, cloud computing in health care has tripled since 2014

A radiology information system (RIS) is a networked software system for managing medical imagery and associated data. A RIS is especially useful for tracking radiology imaging orders and billing information, and is often used in conjunction with PACS.

PACS system evolution is reflected by the growth in the market value, from USD679.4 million in 2009 to a projected value of USD1.35 billion by 2016. This shows that there is the increase growth in this market.

Increasing government projects encouraging the use of higher data storage technology:

As per the report the volume of healthcare data at 153 Exabytes in 2013. At the projected growth rate, that figure will swell to 2,314 Exabytes by 2020.

The new connected world of today is producing data at a pace that is unprecedented in human history. It is estimated that today more than 3 billion people are connected to the internet (compared to only 2.3 million people in 1990). These 3 billion people are producing data every second of their digital lives. This has led to the rise of big data.

Analysis predicts that data will benefit the U.K. economy by up toUSD320.53illion between 2015 and 2020.
