A radiology information system (RIS) is a networked software suite for managing medical imagery and associated data. This is very useful in managing radiological records and associated data in multiple locations, and is often used in conjunction with a picture archiving and communication system (PACS) to manage workflow and billing. According to news released on “evaluate” in November 2013, Two leading Singapore public healthcare groups, SingHealth and Eastern Health Alliance also called as EH Alliance, and the Singapore Health Ministry’s IT arm, IHiS, have purchased Carestream’s Vue Radiology Information System (RIS) and Vue Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) for obtaining better access and management of radiology results and patient imaging data. Increasing need for improved healthcare information technology systems:

According to diagnostic and interventional cardiology in December 2012, new trends and technology in radiology has been seen. The newer remote viewing systems allow access via e-mail or the Internet to images. It also reports through modules for a PACS. This is a third-party standalone system or linked to the facility’s archive/storage system. Most of them are web based or cloud based system so they can be easily accessed outside of the hospital computer system and comes with a password protection to ensure security.

According to a news release by Philips in April 2018, Philips partners with digital China health to launch SHINEFLY– which is a secure cloud-based platform for tele-radiology applications. This will help primary and remotely located hospitals in China to enhance the access and quality of care.

A study was conducted to find the impact of PACS on its users in hospitals of Saudi Arabia, A questionnaire was prepared and was submitted, response rate was 62.5%. The study results showed that PACS has a positive impact on its users. Users have shown a positive insight towards the PACS for its impacts on their daily work.

PACS technology was installed only in 8.5% of the hospitals, as per the study conducted in 2000. By 2008, around 3,928 hospitals out of the 5,168 hospitals covered under the survey, or about 76.0% of total hospitals, indicated that PACS was used in at least one of the modalities, such as digital mammography.

As with the time passes we can see various improved healthcare information technology systems.
