Market Definition

Cationic starch is a type of starch that has been modified. Cationic starches are primarily used as wet-end starches. While native starch can be used as a wet-end starch, cationic starches are preferred. As cationic starches are positively charged, the negatively charged cellulose fiber and fillers easily attract them. As a result, the fibre-to-fibre and fibre-to-filler bonds become stronger. There are two commercially available cationic starches: quaternary ammonium type cationic starch and tertiary amino type cationic starch. Quaternary ammonium starch is cationic across the pH spectrum, whereas tertiary amino starch is cationic only in the acidic range.

The COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc in various industries, including the food and beverage industry, in a short time due to supply-chain disruptions. The pandemic had an impact on the entire starch sector, both positively and negatively. People began to panic as concerns about food and beverage supply grew as a result of global lockdowns and strict travel restrictions. Rushes at grocery stores, high demand for processed food with long shelf lives, and limited availability of processed food in the market all contributed to brief supply chain disruptions during the lockdown. However, processed and packaged goods sales increased as consumers rushed to restock their cupboards. The pandemic of COVID-19 increased consumption of processed foods and other long-lasting, shelf-stable foods containing modified starch.
