Market Definition

A dielectric gas is also known as insulating gas. It is a dielectric material in gaseous state. Its main purpose is to prevent quench electric discharges. Dielectric gases are mainly used as electrical insulators in high voltage applications such as switchgear, radar waveguides, transformers, circuit breakers, etc. A good dielectric gas should have chemical inertness, high dielectric strength and high thermal stability. The most common dielectric gas is air because of its low cost and ubiquity. Another commonly used gas is a dry nitrogen.

Di-electric Gases Market Dynamics

Drivers

  • Increasing demand in several industries

There are many gases present on earth but the most common gases which is used across the globe for insulation purpose in dielectric gases are fluoronitrile (FN), fluoroketones (FK), Nitrogen, dry air, SF6, and others. As a result, di-electric gases have shown a significant share in petrochemicals, power utilities and the chemicals industry, which is anticipated to boost the market demand in the forecast period.

  • Rise the demand in construction sector

The rapidly growing urbanisation increase the demand for constructing commercial and residential infrastructure. In order to ensure residents’ safety and the durability of buildings, the key vendors are deploying dielectric gases based insulating material. It observed that the dielectric gas insulators are far more lucrative compared to other conventional insulators. This is the factor which is bolstering the di-electric gases market growth.

  • High Reliance on Sulfur Hexafluoride

Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is highly electronegative gas both at room temperature and at temperatures well above ambient. The breakdown voltage of SF6 about three times greater than air at atmospheric pressure. It also has recovery and fast self-healing properties because of its heat transfer properties due to this it can reform itself when separated under high gas-pressure conditions in an arc or electric discharge. Due to these major properties sulfur hexafluoride widely used in transportation and power utilities.

Opportunities

  • Increase the number of Emerging markets

According to FMI, many market players are involved in the manufacturing of existing products, such as dry air, SF6 and nitrogen, whereas others are engaged in the development of substitutes of SF6 gas type. It is also one of the major greenhouse gases. SF6 plays a main role in the dielectric gases market and create new opportunities for the market revenue.

  • Technological advancement

However, the manufacture are developing the alternative of SF6 technology. Currently, only 3M Company has developed an alternative technology, but this technology has not been commercialized yet. So, there exists a golden opportunity for the new market players to develop an alternative technology and make their place in the global Dielectric Gases market.

Restraints/ Challenges

However, the outbreak of pandemic COVID-19 has hit the global health and economic institutions. The growth of the di-electric gases market is expected to be affected by this pandemic crisis and is also projected to see a significant drop in growth of dielectric gases market. This is one of the major market restrains that will obstruct the market's growth rate.

COVID-19 Impact on Di-electric Gases Market

The outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic has a negative impact on the global di-electric gases market. During this pandemic, a huge reduction in industrial and commercial activities has been witnessed due to the restriction and lockdown on movement globally. This resulted in the reduction in electricity demand, ultimately affecting the use of di-electric gases in high voltage applications. Though, with the ease in the restrictions, the market may again gain traction in the upcoming years.

Recent Development

  • In April 2020, Novec, 3M Company collaborated with ABB and GE for the growth of this product. This collaborative effort resulted in introducing a high-potential substitute to SF6 technology and technology exchange, which added value to the global landscape.
  • In August 2021, Linde India signed a business transfer agreement with HPS Gase to acquire its whole packaged gases business with certain distribution assets for an aggregate cash consideration of Rs.27.5 crore.
