The simplest and most important epoxide is ethylene oxide which is prepared on a large scale by the process of catalytic oxidation of ethylene in the presence of air. It is used as a fumigant and used to form antifreeze, ethylene glycol, and other useful compounds. Also the epoxides are significantly helpful in functional groups with respects to the organic chemistry in order to generate reactive centres.
