Market Opportunities

  • Growth in steel and process industries.
  • The implementation of stringent safety and environmental regulations and growing industrial development activities.

Market Definition

An air separation plant is an industrial facility that separates atmospheric air into its primary components, mainly nitrogen, oxygen, and argon, as well as trace amounts of other gases. The process is based on the principle of cryogenic distillation, which takes advantage of the different boiling points of various gases when subjected to extremely low temperatures.

Global Air Separation Plant Market Dynamics

Drivers

  • Demand for Industrial Gases

Air separation plants primarily produce industrial gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, and argon, which have a wide range of applications in various industries. The presence of a significant demand for these gases, either locally or regionally, acts as a driver for the establishment and operation of air separation plants.

  • Industrial Growth

Rapid industrialization and the growth of industrial sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, chemicals, electronics, and energy often drive the need for large quantities of industrial gases. As industries expand, there is an increased demand for air separation plants to provide a reliable and continuous supply of gases.

Opportunities

  • Industrial gas supply and healthcare and medical applications create demand in the market

Air separation plants are primarily used to produce industrial gases. These gases have diverse applications across industries, including metallurgy, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, electronics, food and beverage, and more. By establishing air separation plants, you can supply nitrogen, oxygen, and argon to these industries, fulfilling their gas requirements.

Oxygen is vital for medical facilities, including hospitals, clinics, and emergency services. Air separation plants can produce high-purity medical-grade oxygen, ensuring a reliable supply for various medical applications. With the increasing demand for medical gases, this sector offers significant growth potential.

Restraints/Challenges

  • Energy Consumption

Air separation plants require significant amounts of energy to operate. One of the key restraints is optimizing energy efficiency to minimize operational costs and environmental impact. Technologies such as cryogenic distillation, pressure swing adsorption (PSA), and membrane separation are employed to improve energy efficiency. Safety is a critical restraint in any industrial plant, including air separation plants. The handling of cryogenic liquids and high-pressure gases poses potential hazards. Adequate safety measures, such as robust equipment design, proper ventilation, fire protection systems, and adherence to safety protocols, are essential to ensure the safety of personnel and the surrounding environment.

Recent Developments

  • In January 2022, Air Liquide will invest around 350 Crores Rupees (40 million euros) in a new Air Separation Unit (ASU) dedicated to Industrial Merchant activities in Kosi, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Northern India. This unit will have a production capacity of 350 tonnes per day, with a maximum of 300 tonnes of oxygen. Air Liquide India will build, own and operate this ASU, which is planned to start operating by the end of 2023.
